Solo Travel – Top Tips for the Lone Wolf

Traveling alone can sound scary to many. But, when it comes to rediscovering yourself, being one with your thoughts and contemplation, finding peace, being impulsive and not being distracted by anybody, travelling alone can be the thing for you.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to make your trip an awesome one and yet save money at the same time.

Ditch hotels – The fancy hotels charge you a lot for functional rooms that have no charm and no excitement whatsoever. Make sure you try out some hotel that promises good service and home like comfort. This will help you not feel the strain of your journey and explore new avenues of boarding and lodging.

Advanced booking – Sometimes, booking well in advance can help you get discounts on the costs. So, book your tickets and reserve rooms or cars beforehand. Early bird offers, festival discounts, etc should be utilized appropriately.

Go walking – Even though the distance you cover will be less, still it will be totally worth it. Walking through marketplaces, feeling the buzz of the crowd, the typical smells, the new people, their customs, attire, etc can all enrich your overall trip. Walking can also help you save some money as well.

Meet new people – You are more likely to meet new people when you are travelling alone. Make friends with the locals to know about good places to stay, visit and eat. Seeing a place through the eyes of the local folk can give you a new perspective regarding things. When you have the first hand experience at your fingertips, you are bound to make better choices and get your money’s worth.

Backpack – Travel light and carry nuts, fruits and snacks. Eat them when you are hungry instead of spending money in cafes and restaurants. Shop in local farmers markets for fresh produce and eat healthy. Travelling light will also help you travel using public transportation. You can save money in this manner.
Free stuff- Find out more about which museums, galleries, historical places, etc are free. Visit them definitely. Knowing about restaurants and bars and their happy hours can also help you save quite a few bucks.

Try something new – When you are alone, you have the chance to be yourself and focus solely on what kind of experience you want to have and what kind of memories you want to build. Trying something new will help you transcend your limitations and boundaries and expand your knowledge base. This will help you grow and enhance your personality and attitude.

Traveling can be quite a wholesome and enjoyable experience if you are willing to be free of prejudices and have fun to the fullest. The ways mentioned above will help you have fun while not spending too much.

I think the important thing for a solo traveller is not where u go, but what options are available.

I *really* recommend going on a trip with Exodus or Explore or one of those adventure companies. They are excellent and a great way to meet other people.

However, I have also gone *full-solo*, so to speak. If u decide to do that my main tips would be…

    1. Stay in hostels, they are THE BEST place to meet other travelers.

    2. If there are no hostels, go on 1 or 2 day activity outings, e.g. diving, climbing, canyoning, etc. They are another great way to meet people.

    3. Carry your smartphone with you and join websites like Wandermates.com or AirBnB to help meet other people (like me http://www.wandermates.com/profileview.php?profileuserid=6 🙂 None of them are perfect, but they are useful.

    4. Go on a backpacker-type bus tour. They are brilliant also and a great way to hook w guys:)
